Les demoiselles de rochefort
This is so lush; the colours, the symmetry, the similarities and the slight changes...
I took too many screengrabs, but oh my how nice it would be to wear pastels and big hats
and sing in french. I tried myself but it sounds a bit politically incorrect?
Probably because i can't actually speak french.
Ah well, Pish Posh.

Amulets and Talismans
Grand total of 26 drawings I think and by golly they took a long time; was up until 4 yesterday editing them (the fact that i didn't start until 10 is a moot point) and a few hours today finishing the rest. Now to decided on a layout and get them printed and bound! ooooofff. These are a couple of my favourites. I think i'm getting a bit complacent in how I draw...but it's quite nice to see i'm improving.

In Praise of Introverts
Just as I tell myself I can't buy any more books, I read this wonderful article.
Can't help thinking it would be good to whip out some sassy quotes if the situation required it...

Supermarket Sweep
I have a really intense nostalgia for supermarkets, which I blame on an unhealthy diet of itv
programmes as a child. Of fictional supermarkets of course, I can't stomach shopping of any
kind, let alone one that so readily and acceptably lends itself to trolly rage.
But for the packaging, the colours, the beautiful displays...
I could regale hours of fun I had in my plastic kitchen with plastic food.
But I won't. So here are some nice pictures instead.
Dale's Supermarket Sweep (oh, soon will be the day I build a project around that beauty) and the Channel 4 advert, that wondrous end scene in Fantastic Mr Fox, incredibly elaborate supermarket displays of offers and promises of 'instant goodness' and FINALLY, finally I got my hands on Fuel's Own Label book which catalogues the output of their design studio from the early 1960's to late 1970's. It's like a much more calming and enjoyable dip into a fascinating catalogue than, say, a trip to the Museum of Brands. Oh that was stressful.
I have grand plans of developing and creating a range of medicine for my final project - to continue with my fascination of with Medical Quackery. Just to have something i'm really proud to put my name to. Getting that horrible sinking feeling in my stomach when i think of how much i want to do, and how little time i have to do it. All i can think of is:
'THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE.'
But then I listen to this, and it doesn't feel so bad....

Pitt Rivers Oxford
The most beautiful place ever, as if the Wellcome Collection and Huntarian had a baby... sans pickled goodies but plenty of gloomy lighting and cases full of treats. I went a bit snap happy, due to there being 2 full cases of amulets//talismans//superstitious medicine bits (perfect for my project) and for once, the photos I took came out quite nice.

Design Inspiration
For this project, and just generally.
Beautiful information design on the solar system (from bibliodyssey) and some tasty book coversand layout ideas - I NEED to track that 'Wonder Atlas' down! What a lovely thing.
Currently making a (much too ambitious) to do list, to make up for the slack these past couple of weeks. Cue all good things; lots of research, lots of staring at indesign and lots of pencil drawings.
Ace.

Divine

I received Female Trouble for christmas (from my dad no less, although i don't think he knew
what it was) and kept myself from watching it until my dissertation was handed in so i could
savour every disgusting minute of it. No one wanted to watch it with me. Bobbie even moved to
Morocco avoid watching it...temporarily, but you know.
I keep humming this AMAZING song from the opening credits now
New work will be posted soon, as well as some exciting developments later this week!
But I can't help thinking that I wish i'd had the foresight to do my fmp around Divine. Imagine that.
Dayum.

Cargo Collective
As this blog seems to be a collection of things i like and things i do - the former
seems to have taken precedence recently - work that i've made seems to have got
a bit lost among the multiple posts along the lines of 'ohhh i wish i did this.'
So i've set up a cargo collective site with recent (and not so recent) my work which
can be seen HERE. It's a work in progress so slowly but surely adding more bits to it.

Decorative Jargon
I really enjoy doing labour intensive work, that almost makes me feel
like i'm going to go blind i have to concentrate so much.

The above work is part of my self-directed work on medical quackery and spin.
although what i've done so far seems to be what other people have told me to
do and, by going through the motions, i've lost a sense of WHY i wanted to do it.
By highlighting elements of serious side effects which are tucked away in the
DECORATIVE JARGON of small print in medical leaflets that are designed to be
as offputting to read as possible thus disguising potential hazards of painkillers
like nurofen which can result in heart attack or stroke // infertility in women.
Suffice to say after looking at it properly, the top type size on each is too
small to be properly legible (or communicate what it's supposed to...effectively
the point of my degree....) and the bottom of the first can only be [sort of] read
if small or far away. and that the fact that the one legible one is off centre.
Hopefully i'll be putting more work up here soon!
here's hoping though.
I seem to be trying my damndest to fail this year.
And by that i mean this dissertation is trying to kill me.

Words of Wisdom
It's probably quiet telling that i enjoy writing when i don't have to do it so the process of writing this 3000 word draft is like pulling teeth. While typing up some (seemingly relevant) lectures from last term i came across a talk by Karsten Schmidt where he talks about Anton's speech in Ratatouille. I haven't seen the film (yet) but this is good:
In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defence of the new. The world is often unkind to new talents, new creations. The new needs friends. Last night, I experienced something new; an extraordinary meal from a singularly unexpected source. To say that both the meal and its maker have challenged my preconceptions about fine cooking, is a gross understatement. They have rocked me to my core. In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau's famous motto, "Anyone can cook". But I realise — only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere.
